Mapping Equality

The following is a collection of MAP’s resources addressing the rapidly changing LGBTQ policy landscape. These resources examine how far states’ LGBTQ-related laws and policies have changed over time, drawing on the more than 50 policies we track via our LGBTQ Equality Maps. In addition to periodic updates of state level policy changes and bill tracking, this library of resources includes comprehensive retrospectives, annual legislative wrap-ups, and forecasts taking stock of recent trends and offering suggestions of what changes may lie ahead.

Equality Snapshot: Overall Policy Score
This map shows the overall policy scores (as distinct from sexual orientation or gender identity scores) for each state, the District of Columbia, and the five populated U.S. territories. A state’s policy score accounts for more than 50 laws and policies within each state that impact the lives of LGBTQ
LGBT Populations: Overall
These maps illustrate demographic statistics analyzed by the Williams Institute which detail LGBT populations in the U.S., including LGBT people raising children and same-sex couples raising children.
LGBT Population Density
This map shows the estimated percentage of each state’s adult (ages 18+) population that identifies as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender, based on analysis by The Williams Institute.
LGBT Populations: LGBT People Raising Children
This map shows the percent of LGBT people (ages 25 and over) raising children in each state, based on data collected by Gallup and analyzed by the The Williams Institute.
LGBT Populations: Same-Sex Couples Raising Children
LGBT Populations
This map shows the estimated raw number of LGBT people (ages 13+) living in each state. These data are based on a series of studies by UCLA’s The Williams Institute.

LGBTQ people in the United States have families, work hard to earn a living, pay taxes, and serve their communities and their country. MAP offers a collection of resources addressing the many aspects of LGBTQ people’s lives.
Forecasting Equality: Expected Changes to LGBTQ Policies in 2026
Since 2020, political attacks on LGBTQ people, and especially transgender people, have escalated — but LGBTQ people and allies have also fought back and won important victories. This forecast takes stock of recent years in LGBTQ legislation at the state level and suggests what may lie ahead in 2026.
